The conference is organized in honor of Professor Stratis Kounias, who has made significant contributions to the areas of Experimental Designs, and related Combinatorics. Stratis Kounias is the first who introduced Experimental Design Theory in Greek education.
Theme of the conference
The theme of the conference is Experimental Design, taken in a broad sense,
both from the statistical and combinatorial angles. Thus, for example,
branches of combinatorics like Finite Geometries, Association Schemes,
Block Designs, Orthogonal Arrays, Coding Theory, and Cryptography, which are
close to Statistical Design Theory are covered, as well as other branches of
combinatorics which are more tangential. Linear Algebra and particularly Matrix
Theory play also an important role in the study and construction methods of
many kinds of statistical designs.
Similarly, more statistical areas such as continuous response surfaces,
nonparametric designs, optimal design theory etc., are also covered.

Additional Information
Weather
The weather in Athens during the first month of summer is rather comfortable. The temprature fluctuates between 25-30 degrees, and humidity levels are normal, while rain is a rare phenomenon this time of the year. Heavy clothing would be uneccesary although the evenings are quite chilly. As you can conclude from the above, the chances to have a pleasant staying here in Athens are pretty high.

The conference will take place in Athens University Campus, located at the foot of mountain Ymitos, at 'Zografou', just a 20 min bus ride from the city center.
Greece, the cradle of Western civilization, the origin of drama and history and philosophy, the birthplace of democracy. Athens, the famous city with great appeal and charm. One of the most affordable cities in the world (the least expensive capital in Europe, according to EUROSTAT, the official EU statistical publication) and also one of its most exciting and hospitable, not to mention safe.
There is no doubt that the crowning glory of the Greek capital is the Parthenon on the Acropolis.

A place nobody should forget visiting in this beautiful capital is the
hill Lycabettus sitting right in the center of the city. This quite
high hill (909 ft) looks like fairyland at night.

Eating out. This could be very exciting. From street-eating, buying a Koulouri (sesame seed bread ring) from a street vendor,

or Galaktoboureko (delectable custard-filled flaky pastry topped with a dusting of icing sugar), to Tyropitta (cheese pies) or souvlaki (kebabs in pie), now known in most European capitals, one may eat a full meal just by traversing the streets. Restaurants galore are now added to the traditional tavern where a cheap meal still usually can be had. Greek wines are measuring up to. Once producing mostly retsina, the wine with strange -but good- taste, nowadays Greek wines are becoming noticed and are very good indeed.
Athens has over 45 museums. The most famous is the National Archaeological
Museum, which is not only on a convenient trolley bus route (the No.8)
but houses a treasure trove of ancient artifacts. This museum would take
weeks in which to see everything, but a few hours will suffice the visitor
who will get a flavor of just how vast and magnificent the collection is.

Past the small Byzantine church of Kapnikarea, one nears Monastiraki and the Flea Market. Best on Sundays, it is still a fascinating area with anything from souvenirs in all their myriad form, marble chess sets, copper pans, ceramic pots, to junk and antiques. Old coins, stamps, furniture, baskets and junk, all go to make this area one of the most fascinating in the city.
From Monastiraki Square, one easily reaches the neighborhood of Plaka a distinct part of the old city, a really picturesque spot in the center of a modern city. Lying under the shadows of the Acropolis walls, its winding narrow streets, some only fit for one person at a time to get through, Plaka has been restored to its former glory. The charm of its pastel hued walls and wrought iron balconies, geranium spilling onto stone steps, small churches every where, each with their own congregation, and taverns and souvenir shops vying for the visitors attention.
Night life has night clubs, taverns, restaurants, a magnificent Concert Hall worthy of any European capital, an Opera Company (the Lyriki Skini), theatres and cinemas, indoor and outdoor, including the ancient Herod Atticus theatre.
Variety is the key, ancient or modern, it's all here, in some cases as it has been for thousands of years, in others, perhaps since last month. Whatever you find in Athens, you certainly won't be bored.
